Piano Tuning in Kansas City

by Jake Wells

Hi, I’m Jake

I grew up in Pensacola, Florida, and music has been at the center of my life for as long as I can remember. Singing and piano have always been my two main pursuits. I studied music composition at the University of Northern Colorado, and in 2018 you might have caught me on NBC’s The Voice (thanks for the chair turn, Adam).

I started playing piano when I was 11 years old. At that age, the instrument can feel like an impossible mountain to climb — 88 keys, three pedals, two feet, ten fingers… and maybe even a stray foot or elbow if you’re feeling adventurous. But what kept me hooked wasn’t just the challenge. When my 14-year-old voice was shaky and unreliable, the piano became the way I could still sing. It gave me a voice of its own, and that’s where my real love for the instrument began.

I tuned my first piano more than a decade ago. I’ll be honest: I made it worse. Luckily it was my own piano, but that “failure” was the spark that made me realize just how deep and fascinating this craft is. Playing the piano is one thing — getting under the hood is something else entirely. Every piano has its own personality: a unique feel, sound, look, resonance, hum, and history. That individuality is what makes working on them so rewarding.

Here’s the funny thing — I’ve never had a formal piano lesson. I’ve always trusted my ear, and that instinct has guided me both as a musician and as a tuner. Most people think you either “have an ear” or you don’t, but in my experience, it’s something you can grow into. And I like to think that when you hire me, you’re not just getting a technician — you’re inviting someone who listens closely, responds sensitively, and helps your piano find its natural voice again.

I love this work. Whether your piano has turned into a piece of furniture that hasn’t been touched in years, or it’s your pride and joy that needs to be studio-ready, I can help you bring it back to life.

Let’s make your piano sing.
